My former English teacher Richard Reid kindly suggested I get in touch with Susan Emmett who lives in Ryton and runs the Throckley Drama Group. They are going to be performing Baby Boomers Behaving Badly, in Emmaville Hall, Crawcrook, on the evening of Saturday 5th March. This is for the Ryton Festival of Music and Drama and it’s an original play by north-east writer Rachel Cochrane. You may remember that twelve months ago Wendy Craig surprised me with a phone call to share her recollections of the Festival, having taken part when she was a little girl. Susan allowed me to drop in on rehearsals for Baby Boomers, where I met members of the group and Rachel too. The society also has an entry in the Festival’s duolgue category.
Member Olive White told me that Throckley Drama Group has been running since 1951, when they won the Festival of Britain Drama Section. Originally called The Throckley Methodist Drama Group, they were based in Throckley Chapel until it closed in 1990, and since then their home has been Heddon-on-the-Wall. They’ve performed many one to three act plays, and new members are always welcome. Here’s the link and also some photos from rehearsals. Throckley Drama Group.
