During my stint at Ryton Community Library last week, I got chatting to fellow volunteer Lin, who mentioned an upcoming gig at The Cluny in Byker on Saturday 27th February. It’s in aid of the West End Refugee Service, and Lin’s other half Mike will be performing there, along with band Sleeping Dogs. Lin immediately caught my interest because I’ve seen Mike before, with The Tenth Avenue Band, who I raved about after seeing them at a fund-raising event held in Greenside Social Club last September Borneo fund-raiser
Sleeping Dogs are an eight piece band of musicians, but they play in various combinations, including headlining as a threesome at the Tyne Folk Club in the Black Bull, Blaydon, last January, and three of the members are Rytonians. The full line up is; Mike Soanes (vocals/guitar) Helen Forster (cello/vocals) Martin Hoile (piano and vocals) Emma Scott (alto sax) David Gold (trumpet) Alan O’ Neil (bass) Janet Longbottom (trombone) and Steve Forster (percussion). All of their material is original, and if you would like to hear some of it then get yourself along to The Cluny next month. In the meantime if you search on “Sleeping Dogs on Canna” you can enjoy a You Tube taster. I’ve loved listening to Sleeping Dogs while writing this, they have added further cement to my long-held belief that there are rich seams of performing ability to be tapped into here in the North East. I’ll enjoy hearing them at The Cluny even more. The other good news is that the band have produced a CD, available from Mike for £5, or else you can download it via Itunes for £3.16. Go to Itunes and search on “The Watch”, by Sleeping Dogs. To speak to Mike email me on email@example.com and I’ll put you in touch.
Sleeping Dogs will be at The Cluny, 7.30pm to 11pm, Saturday 27th February.
Band starts at 8pm followed by a DJ set. Tickets cost £10 waged and £5 unwaged, and to get one you can contact any of the following.
